Discover Alberni Episode 24: Glenwood
Glenwood is one of the best neighbourhoods in Port Alberni for sports lovers and families. This neighbourhood is primarily residential and homes are a mix between single-family homes, duplexes, apartments, ranchers, and mid-century style houses.
Nearby features include plenty of sports facilities, shopping options, and a large park with Roger Creek running through it. Both large families and retirees benefit from Glenwood in terms of housing types, affordability, and its central location making it perfect for accessing nearby amenities.
Glenwood is located between Roger Street and Roger Creek Park. The southern end has commercial options along Roger Street and 10th Avenue such as restaurants, a bike shop, and a hair salon. The town’s only high school, Alberni District Secondary School, is up Roger Street. This area is excellent for light shopping and convenient access for children to attend school. A museum, library, and swimming pool in Echo are only a block away.
Sports lovers crave the amenities and entertainment from the Alberni Athletic Hall, AV Multiplex, Bob Dailey Stadium, and Glenwood Centre. Anything from ice skating to track and field is a viable option here. Roller-skating, badminton, basketball, ice hockey, and walking or jogging along the track are some recreational activities in the Glenwood area.
There are some fantastic ball fields nearby, as well. Of all the neighbourhoods in Port Alberni, this one has the most variety and ease of access for fitness activities. Often, these facilities also host local events like book fairs, dog shows, and crafts markets. There’s always something fun to do in Glenwood!
The northern border of Glenwood is up against Roger Creek Park. This area is residential, so locals can walk out their doors and be close to nature in no time at all. The park contains several trails, picnic tables, and a fun splash waterpark for kids. Just beyond is another commercial area on Johnston Road filled with shops and restaurants.
What makes Glenwood so great is its balance between nature on one side and things to do on the other. Once residents have had their fill of activities for the day, it is seamless to transcend into a different state of mind simply by going for a walk on the trails or having a picnic by the creek. Housing options make this area affordable for a large number of people, and its central location contributes to convenient shopping, running errands, and enjoying activities. All these reasons combine to make Glenwood a wonderful place to live within the valley. `
