Discover Alberni Episode 14 - Recreational Facilities
Port Alberni is rich in recreational facilities, suitable for many different interests and abilities. Whether you are looking to swim, skate, bike, curl, or browse some local history, there are many options available. Here are a few of our favourites for you to check out.
The Alberni Valley Multiplex located on Roger Street is a popular destination not only for its ice and figure skating but for hosting several exciting BC hockey league games. The Weyerhaeuser Arena is one of the two ice rinks and it holds over 1800 spectators. This is the home of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the island’s most enthusiastic hockey fans! Apart from the ice, the AV Multiplex also plays host to various concerts and graduation ceremonies.
Right next door is the Alberni Athletic Hall. This multi-purpose hall is popular for basketball games, wrestling tournaments, and community events like craft fairs. Just a short walk away on Vimy Street is Bob Dailey Stadium, where visitors gather to walk around a 400m long track, exercise, watch football games, and socialize.
Behind the track is Glenwood Centre, a local staple for rollerblading and a venue of choice for events such as home shows, dog shows, and craft fairs. The Echo ‘67 Centre has been in the valley for many years and provides visitors with the Echo Aquatic and Fitness Centre, a branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library, the Alberni Valley Museum, and general spaces for events and programs.
The City of Port Alberni offers seasonal programs and activities, of which many take place in the community centre. These programs in years past have included classes for topics in art, fitness, crafts, and cooking. The Echo Sunshine Club, for those aged 50 and better, is another great opportunity for socializing, trying a new hobby or two, and keeping active.
Port Alberni has a robust curling club located on 9th Avenue. The Alberni Valley Curling Club has teams for men, women, mixed, and junior leagues. This facility has been operating since the 1950s and has no evidence of slowing down any time soon.
There is also a skateboard park, lawn bowling club, numerous baseball and softball fields, and fishing marinas. And if you can’t make up your mind about what to explore next, the beautiful Alberni Valley offers many parks and trails for your leisure.
