Discover Alberni Episode 10 - Harbour Quay

The Alberni Valley is called the Heart of Vancouver Island for good reason. Not only is it the geographic centre of the major population concentrations on the island, it is also a microcosm of Vancouver Island in terms of landscape. In turn, the Harbour Quay must be considered the Heart of the Alberni Valley.

Located at the base of Argyle Street in South Alberni, the Harbour Quay is a collection of waterfront shops and eateries, centered around a working waterfront setting. At the Harbour Quay you can find everything from fresh-made doughnuts, fish and chips to fine dining. In addition, the Spirit Square Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings is always busy.    

The Harbour Quay is also the home of the Clock Tower which grants panoramic views of the Alberni Inlet, Port Alberni and Mount Arrowsmith. You will also find the terminal for the MV Frances Barkley, a passenger and freight vessel that offers scenic journeys to Bamfield and Ucluelet. Even the children’s playground features nautically-themed equipment at the Harbour Quay.

The Centennial Pier has added a whole new dimension to the Harbour Quay. Stretching out in to the inlet it affords great views of wildlife, water, mountains and city, as well as serving as a valuable breakwater for Fishermen's Harbour.  The pier is also home to one of Vancouver Island's most unique and acclaimed bed and breakfasts - The Swept Away Inn. The Swept Away Inn is a refinished 70-year-old tugboat that serves as both accommodation and restaurant.

Two popular attractions at Port Alberni's Harbour Quay are the Lighthouse Pier featuring the Maritime Heritage Discovery Centre, and the amazing West Coast Aquatic Aquarium.   

Of course the Harbour Quay is...a harbour. The recreational marina has 15 slips for moorage and more than 2,000 lineal feet of side tie moorage available.

For visitors to the Alberni Valley the Harbour Quay is a little out of the way, and takes a little finding. But, if you love Vancouver Island and the west coast you'll love exploring the Harbour Quay!
