The houses were designed with an 'English Arts and Crafts' and 'Edwardian' style influence. Most homes were finished being built by 1945. Although renovations have naturally taken place over the years, the area's residents try to maintain the rich history that each house so evidently shows.
Because there are a few different areas of Southlands, there are a few minor changes in housing in each area. The northern part of Southlands mirrors the neighbouring region of Dunbar, which offers more eclectic style homes. The Musqueam Indian Reserve is another area of Southlands, and the homes here are mostly built on long-term land leases and are not original homes of the area. The western region of the neighbourhood is all made up of single-family residences on generous-sized lots, with many horse stables and farm-like properties. This neighbourhood is perfect for anyone looking for a country lifestyle that is only a short 20 minutes from the downtown core of Vancouver.
About Southlands, Vancouver, BC
Located on the banks of the Fraser River, the Southlands area is Vancouver's old neighbourhood. Before Vancouver became a city, a group of Irish settlers in the 1800s came to the area now known as Southlands. Many of the residents living in the Southlands area now have a family history that dates back 150 years, connecting with some of the first and original settlers.
Anyone who visits the neighbourhood experiences the magical countryside feel that it brings. One minute you are in the hustle and bustle of Vancouver city, and the next, you are driving on dirt roads by open horse fields and riding centres, waving at every neighbour walking their horse on the street. Every home sits on a generous amount of land, and some of the properties overlook the Fraser River. Across the way from the Fraser River is the Vancouver International Airport, where the hour passes like minutes as you watch airplanes land and depart.

Southlands is associated with the area of Dunbar, which is north of the neighbourhood. Part of what adds to the Southlands character is the flatlands that the community is built on. The location is also full of families and people who have deep care and reverence for the space they reside in.
Because many families call Southlands home, there are many great options for schools in and nearby the neighbourhood.
