About South Cambie, Vancouver, BC

Home to BC Children’s Hospital, BC Women’s Hospital and Health Care Centre, GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, and Canadian Blood Services, the South Cambie area is a beautiful, primarily residential neighbourhood with a handful of commercial businesses and facilities. It is considered one of the smallest areas in Vancouver, speaking in terms of both population and land size! South Cambie was once dominated by oxen, elk, loggers, ranchers, and Chinese vegetable gardeners earlier in its day. What is now the popular “Douglas Park” was once claimed by William Mackie, who resided on the 65-hectare property in 1874. He was the first non-native settler and spent his days logging and gold mining. Eventually, houses began to spring up all over the area, and in 1926, the property was designated as Douglas Park.

South Cambie has since developed into an attractive area south of Oakridge. Its borders include 59th Avenue on the south, Oak Street on the west, Ontario Street on the east, and 49th Avenue on the north. This area has numerous heritage sites, including a 1912 Tudor-style building that is now home to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police training facility. South Cambie also held the site of the famous Shaughnessy Hospital, which was used significantly during World War I and World War II. Transit around the area is made easy for residents and visitors by using the Canada Line that runs through the entire South Cambie Neighbourhood.
