It is considered one of the smallest areas in Vancouver, speaking in terms of both population and land size! South Cambie was once dominated by oxen, elk, loggers, ranchers, and Chinese vegetable gardeners earlier in its day. What is now the popular “Douglas Park” was once claimed by William Mackie, who resided on the 65-hectare property in 1874. He was the first non-native settler and spent his days logging and gold mining. Eventually, houses began to spring up all over the area, and in 1926, the property was designated as Douglas Park.
South Cambie has since developed into an attractive area south of Oakridge. Its borders include 59th Avenue on the south, Oak Street on the west, Ontario Street on the east, and 49th Avenue on the north. This area has numerous heritage sites, including a 1912 Tudor-style building that is now home to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police training facility. South Cambie also held the site of the famous Shaughnessy Hospital, which was used significantly during World War I and World War II. Transit around the area is made easy for residents and visitors by using the Canada Line that runs through the entire South Cambie Neighbourhood.

If you have heard of the South Cambie area, there is a chance you have heard of Cambie Village. Cambie Village is one of Vancouver’s main heritage areas and stretches from West 6th Avenue to King Edward Avenue. The village provides easy access to many main transit lines, providing residents and visitors the convenience of getting to downtown Vancouver or YVR International Airport without the headache of traffic. Cambie Village was one of 11 neighbourhoods in Vancouver that participated in the Vancouver Mural Festival, painting five beautiful murals throughout the entirety of the Cambie neighbourhood.
South Cambie has many beautiful naturistic scenes for residents to enjoy, including the Langara Golf Course and numerous jogging and walking trails. Have a picnic at Cambie Park, located on the west side of South Cambie. The park also offers many recreational amenities such as soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and football fields.
