In 1922, the first zoning bylaw prevented development in the area of anything except detached homes. Point Grey runs along English Bay, with access to both the University of British Columbia and the Kitsilano area. This neighbourhood has demonstrated to be set apart, as it is full of rich beauty and history. Captain George Vancouver originally named the area for his friend, Captain George Grey. In 1908, Point Grey was named its own municipality, and the council did not waste time making it comfortable for those residing there. Water services were in place within one year, construction projects were underway, and the classic Jericho Golf and Country Club opened.
A year later, the schoolhouse was established and served the area’s total of 24 children. Today, visitors can still see the schoolhouse on the bluffs overlooking the Spanish Banks. By 1924, the neighborhood had 40 shops along 10th Avenue. Being one of the most high-class neighbourhoods in Canada, Point Grey houses a large variety of just over 13,000 residents. From business executives and owners, artists, University students and faculty, artists, and young families, the neighbourhood is nothing short of inviting and appealing.
Things to Do in Point Grey
Recreation and relaxation are at the fingertips of those who reside in Point Grey. It provides a large variety of parks and beaches, perfect for biking, walking, watching the sunset, beach volleyball, or swimming. One area described as a “hidden gem” is Westmount Park, located on Bianca Street, which is filled with ancient trees and play areas for children. Jericho Beach, Locarno Beach, and the Spanish Banks offer many trails that run through the forest and along the beaches.
The West Point Grey Community Centre provides activities at several different facilities, such as Aberthau Mansion, which is home to an interactive pottery studio, Jericho Arts Centre with a drama company, and Jericho Hill Centre, which has a pool and weight room.
Fiesta Days are a popular annual event for Point Grey residents, featuring local vendors made up of local businesses working together to host the event. There is a parade, live stage performances, a carnival, and a small handful of theme park rides. July brings the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, where music floods the entire neighbourhood, attracting local and international visitors to come and experience some of the most popular names in the folk music industry.
