In the 1910-1912 boom period, craftsman-style houses were the most popular in Kitsilano. You can notice these houses today by their rich variety of textures, interesting finishing materials, decorative baskets, stretched low-pitched gable roofs, and mock trusses. At World War II, many of the old estates and single-family homes that resided above the beach were transformed into rooming houses.These rooming houses remained until the late 1960s, at which time the area became much more popular with younger university students attending UBC, which is not far from the area. This style of house still serves the area well as it’s highly student-populated.

In recent years, many of the original homes have been replaced by apartment complexes. Many of the residents are working hard to protect and preserve the character homes that genuinely make the neighbourhood what it is. The detached properties in Kitsilano are rich in character and are in the upper price range. Many young families and students live here, and it’s known to be a laid-back residential location. 

“Golden Mile” is known as a stretch of properties along Point Grey Road, and they are known for being Vancouver’s most luxurious waterfront properties. Here resides Chip Wilson, the founder of Lululemon, in his mansion assessed at $64.9 million, the most expensive home in Kitsilano. Many of these properties have stunning views of the mountains as well as the water. The neighbourhoods are lined with beautiful trees and houses full of character. About Kitsilano, Vancouver, BC

Kitsilano is the laid-back neighbourhood we’ve all been dreaming of. The “Kits” neighbourhood is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, between two other popular communities, Point Grey and Fairview. Kitsilano continues along the south shore of English Bay on the West Side of Vancouver and is surrounded by these notable boundaries – Burrard Street being the eastern boundary, Alma Street the western boundary, and 16th Avenue as its southern boundary. The neighbourhood is only 3.4 km from Downtown Vancouver. 

The neighbourhood is still known for this today, and there are also many new and active developments taking place. As of 2016, Kitsilano was home to just over 43,000 residents. Kitsilano is full of rich history and interesting facts. One may notice that many of the streets around the area are named after trees (Cypress, Birch, Elm, etc.). These streets were intended to be in alphabetical order, but the engineer neglected to do it when he was given the list! A totem pole outside of the Maritime Museum near Cypress Street (carved by Mungo Martin) is a duplicate of the totem pole gifted to Queen Elizabeth II in 1967. The oldest Vancouver Public Library branch lives in the area as well – it opened in 1927! 

Things to Do in Kitsilano

Between coffee shops, juice bars, exercise studios, beaches, breweries, and shopping, you’ll never be bored in Kitsilano. One of the most iconic activities to take part in is catching the sunset at Kitsilano Beach. The sunsets here are vibrant, and it truly seems like there is a fire in the sky. The colours will leave you speechless, and the soft sandy beach is perfect to lounge on with an ice cream cone. Kitsilano also holds a section of a seawall. This lovely stroll will give you great views of Stanley Park, the North Shore, and the city life of Downtown Vancouver. 

Have a day off? A fun activity is to catch the Aqua Taxi over to Granville Island. It’s a little boat that passes through all the fancy boats anchored around False Creek and takes you right to the Granville Island Market. Vanier Park houses three of Vancouver’s museums and is one of the many beautiful areas around Kitsilano to take the dog out for a walk or get some fresh air on an afternoon stroll. There’s also an annual Celebration of Light firework show that happens here every July and August. 

West 4th Avenue is a strip of outdoor shops that will keep you busy for hours. When you get hungry from shopping, check out one of the many restaurants in and around the neighbourhood. “Naam” is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant that provides customers with a massive menu full of choices. They also bring in live music every night at 7 pm – what’s not to love? If you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, make a stop at “Cartems Donuts” and pick up one of their locally famous donuts.
