North Surrey is a Metro Vancouver neighbourhood comprising the northern portion of the city of Surrey and is considered to be the area encompassing Port Mann, Bridgeview, Guildford, Fraser Heights, and Whalley. Due to the large geographic spread, there is a significant variation in the types of homes available. The most popular type of home is a classic single-family house, but in more dense areas, it is common to see condos and townhomes. The area is made up of the typical cul-de-sac style, and in certain areas further north from the commercial and industrial zones, there are significant mansion homes.

If you are looking for denser living, look to North Surrey’s City Centre, which is evolving into a pedestrian, transit-oriented downtown. The City Centre has been undergoing significant development, with high rises being built directly adjacent to a beautiful balance of commercial, cultural, and recreational activities. For students or families with university students, Simon Fraser University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University are both located here, alongside the modern Surrey City Hall. In addition, there is excellent service to other parts of the Lower Mainland provided by four SkyTrain stations.

As you move further from the Surrey City Centre, there are a variety of older stock single-family homes and duplexes. The area has also seen significant development of wood frame townhouses, and new luxury townhouse builds. There are also 2-4 storey apartments available in certain areas depending on the zoning. In the northern end of the area and in Fraser Heights, large luxury homes are available for purchase, with amenities like pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, and large backyard spaces.

Visit Green Timbers Urban Park

Although Surrey is home to thousands of acres of parks and other green areas, one of the most significant to consider is the Green Timbers Urban Forest. This park is a true union of urban and rural, green and grey, metropolis and picturesque. This is Surrey’s best park and is the equivalent of Central Park in New York City, Hyde Park in London, or Stanley Park in Vancouver. Green Timbers is a classic example of an urban park.

In British Columbia, Green Timbers Urban Forest is also credited with being one of the first examples of reforestation efforts. Although now nestled in the heart of Surrey’s urban development, Green Timbers was once a small part of a towering forest covering over 5,000 magnificent, unspoiled acres. During the late 1800s, it was the only surviving expanse of virgin forest from San Diego to Vancouver, drawing considerable admiration. Travellers flocked from afar to marvel at the famous park’s stunning 200-foot-tall trees.

Today, with over 452 acres of wetlands, crystal lakes, meadows, and nature pathways wrapped up like pearls within a second-growth forest, Green Timbers Urban Forest is currently one of Surrey’s largest parks. In addition, Green Timbers Lake, located in the centre of the park, is filled with rainbow trout, meaning you can fish in the city! Green Timbers is also home to the Surrey Nature Centre, which provides a variety of programming and educational opportunities.

Spend a Rainy Afternoon in the Nature Centre

If you’ve headed to the Green Timbers Urban Forest but are finding it difficult to enjoy because of the weather, it may be a good day for you and your family to check out the Nature Centre. Or, if it is a lovely day, you may enjoy one of the many guided tours or educational initiatives provided by the Nature Centre. The Surrey Nature Centre is committed to educating children and adults on the value of parks and urban woods. For example, the Arboretum is home to more than 77 tree species.

Families are invited indoors to explore the interactive exhibits, filled with local plants and animals, a reading nook, and Sammy the Salamander! Then rent out a fishing rod and cast a line, or take a backpack full of games to start your outdoor adventures.

Spend a Day in Surrey’s Central City Shopping Centre

Central City offers a variety of attractions, shops, and restaurants to enjoy. The complex boasts over 140 stores and restaurants, while also serving as the home for Simon Fraser University’s downtown campus. Central City is significantly less busy than malls like Metrotown or Guildford Town Centre, making it easier to find parking and get straight into the fun part! The Centre also offers access to the SkyTrain if you wish to head to another area.
