Situated about 70 kilometres from Vancouver lies Silverdale, a quiet neighbourhood in the District of Mission.
Silverdale, also sometimes referred to as “Southwest Mission” or the “Silverdale Comprehensive Planning Area,” is designated for significant urban growth under Mission’s Official Community Plan. Covering a span of over 3,400 acres, the land in Silverdale is ripe with real estate opportunities, from single-family homes to strata properties such as condos and townhouses.
The area is being divided into three separate neighbourhoods: Central Neighbourhood, West Neighbourhood and East Neighbourhood. More information on the Silverdale Central Neighbourhood Plan, the first of the three Silverdale Plans that are currently in progress, can be found here.
The District of Mission developed a Master Infrastructure Strategy in partnership with Ekistics Town Planning Inc., which will help serve as a critical tool in this emerging neighbourhood's planning, development and growth. Expect land developers, realtors, and investors to have continued strong interest in Silverdale as population growth is projected in large numbers. Polygon Homes, in particular, hold almost 70% of the land (roughly 1,800 acres) in the Central Neighbourhood and have submitted their Master Plan for the area, with strong support from the District.
About Silverdale, Mission, BC
Historically a rural area known for agricultural, fishing and logging activities, Mission saw a housing construction boom in the 1960s through 1980s during this suburbanization period. Silverdale is bound by rural land to the north, Silverdale Creek to the east, the Fraser River to the south and Silvermere Lake to the west. Like many areas in British Columbia, the neighbourhood gained its namesake from an original British location: Silverdale, Staffshordshire.
Silverdale is best accessible by car via Lougheed Highway (Highway 7) and the Abbotsford-Mission Highway (Highway 11).
Billy Miner famously held up a Canadian Pacific Railway Train on September 10, 1904, which was stopped at Silverdale and leaving Mission Junction at the time of the historic robbery. Rocko’s 24-Hour Diner is another famous hot spot, although primarily for fictional characters, as it is a popular filming location for films and television shows such as Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Riverdale.
The neighbourhood today, although small in population, is occupied by many types of residents, including families and married couples. Silverdale has elementary schools, a middle school, a secondary school, many parks and other community amenities to serve its growing community. The population in Silverdale alone is projected to grow by approximately 40,000 residents, almost double the entire current population of the District of Mission.

Silverdale Creek Wetlands
Mission possesses a bounty of natural beauty that British Columbia is known for, and Silverdale is no exception. Silverdale Creek Wetlands is conveniently located by BC Route 7 for quick access. A relatively short trail at 1.3 kilometres, this easy walk is enjoyable for all ages and fitness levels. Bird watching, in particular, is a popular activity along this path but is also a popular spot for hiking or running. Have a pup? Good news, this trail is dog-friendly! (Leash required).
Mission Golf & Country Club
Established in 1961, this 9-hole, 6,270-yard golf course is surrounded by lush greenery. The site also features a clubhouse that can seat up to 75 people, perfect for parties and celebrations. The club is open seven days a week and features a Ladies' Night every Tuesday for members and non-members.
Mission Raceway Park
Nature not quite your speed? Then head over to the Mission Raceway Park! The BC Custom Car Association was first established in 1952 and now offers motorsports events for all to enjoy. Facility and private rentals are also available for those interested in drag racing, drag strip and drifting, road racing, motorcycle road racing and motocross. Mission is a prime location for a racetrack, as being at sea level provides optimal conditions for breaking speed records!
The Mission Museum
In addition to learning more about the famed Billy Miner, come check out The Mission Museum for a glimpse into the area’s history. They are open Wednesdays – Saturdays (June-August) and Thursdays – Saturdays (September to May) with admission by donation. In addition, the Mission Museum also participates in local public events such as Canada Day and Heritage Week, holds Public Programs like Historic Downtown Walking Tours and offers school programs for elementary schools.
