About Matsqui

Matsqui is a rural farming neighbourhood with quaint residential dwellings spaced out. It truly gives that small-town feeling while still living near the city of Abbotsford. The District Municipality of Matsqui and Abbotsford officially merged in 1995 to form the new city of Abbotsford. Before that, the area was Matsqui but is now considered Abbotsford West and Clearbrook. With just over 2,000 residents, this rural neighbourhood is on the North end of Abbotsford and relies heavily on the agriculture industry. It is well known for its large areas of spacious farmland. Matsqui is considered a bottomland and was said to have been formed by the annual spring flood of heavy rain that swept through the Fraser River. The floodplain was then dyked, and in early 1900, it was converted to abundant farmland. The Fraser River Salish language Halkomelem is where the name Matsqui comes from, meaning "stretch of higher ground."

Being so close to acres of farmland means fresh, locally grown produce. Wong Farms is a popular spot for some of the freshest produce in town, which specializes in fresh items such as green and red cabbage, pumpkins, squash, corn, and other vegetables.

Lepp Farm Market is only five minutes away and is a family-owned and operated spot with lots to choose from, including fruits and veggies, and they even have their own poultry, pork, and fresh Black Angus Beef. Additional shops and restaurants are only minutes away in the downtown area, along with a few different shopping centres. The Abbotsford Regional Hospital is about fifteen minutes away, and the Abbotsford International Airport is twenty minutes.

Several schools offer education for K to 12. Matsqui Elementary, part of Abbotsford's School District 34, is a historic school built over a century ago. Dasmesh Punjabi School is a private school hosting K-12 students. Chief Dan George Middle School and Clayburn Middle service grades 6-8. Chief Dan George is focused on the fine arts and was rated one of the forty best schools in Canada by Today's Parent Magazine. Students grades 9-12 attend W.J. Mouat Secondary School or Robert Bateman Secondary School.
