About Victoria West, BC

Located in the west portion of the city, near the Gorge Waterway, the 158-hectare historic neighbourhood of Victoria West, better known as “Vic West,” is a well-positioned and convenient area to live in. Bordered by the community of Esquimalt to the north, Vic West is across the Inner Harbour from downtown and is surrounded by water on three sides. It is an easy commute via the Johnson Street and Bay Street bridges by car, foot, bike, or bus, and during the warmer months, you can even take a harbour ferry across to shop, eat and work in the downtown core. 

Since its development in the 1890s, Vic West has been a popular place to purchase real estate. A large amount of the development in the area was created for working-class families, with many industrial factories and workshops spread throughout the neighbourhood. As the industry grew in the late 1800s, grand homes for the rich and the locally famous people, like the Dunsmuir family, were erected in the streets of Vic West. Although the largest, the Burleith house, has since been demolished, the Queen-Anne-style Roslyn house still stands as a monument to times past. 

Much of the industrial buildings moved out of the area in the late 20th century, allowing its redevelopment into a mainly residential area. Today, this eclectic community has a friendly and organic feel, with accessible shorelines and walkways lining the waterfront. It is bike-friendly with numerous cycling paths and bike lanes, including the famous Galloping Goose trail. The residents are neighbourly, most of whom are young urban dwellers, families with young children, and professionals. 

Westside Village is the best place in Vic West to get groceries, see a doctor or grab a coffee, and more eateries, community gardens, shops, and cafes are emerging as the area develops into a place with a more youthful vibe. Amenities in Vic West include the Victoria West Community Centre, schools, churches, a public library, music centre, parks, green space, and everything else you will need can be found in the nearby Esquimalt, Songhees, and downtown communities.

Take a Summer Swim at Banfield Park

Banfield Park is a 6.34-hectare park located along the southern shoreline of the Gorge Waterway. You can swim, launch your canoe or kayak here, take in the view from a bench or bring the kids to play on the playground. There are trees, grassy areas, and a thousand metres of paved trails to explore. There are also basketball and tennis courts. Dogs are allowed off-leash in this park all day in the winter and the early mornings (6 AM to 9 AM and evenings 5 PM to 10 PM) during the warmer months. 

Volunteer in the Community

The Victoria West Community Association is a strong group of community members who take pride in dedicating themselves to the people in the area. You can join in a variety of capacities. If you are interested in taking part in children and youth activities, joining as a board member, or working in a community garden once a week, there is something for you here. 

E & N Roundhouse

For a glimpse into the area’s history, check out the E & N Roundhouse. It is known for its practical brick look and is one of the best remaining examples of industrial heritage railway architecture in British Columbia. Although now converted into an active community of condos and retail establishments, the building still holds an interesting historical significance. In 1890 the Vic West area was serviced by a streetcar service, and the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railways used to pass through this area, with trains being serviced and stored at the roundhouse.
