About Lake Cowichan

Lake Cowichan is one of several small communities located on the southern side of Vancouver Island in the Cowichan Lake District. This small town has approximately 3,000 people and is located on the east end of Cowichan Lake, with the Cowichan River flowing through the middle of the town. The surroundings are mountainous Pacific Northwest Temperate rainforest that is rich with wildlife, making it a beautiful place to call home. 

Lake Cowichan is a safe and comfortable community with all the amenities you need for your day-to-day life found within the town or a short drive away in the nearby city of Duncan. Living in Lake Cowichan, you can expect services and amenities like garbage and recycling pickup, a post office, gas stations, grocery stores and police.

Getting to Lake Cowichan

Lake Cowichan is accessible in several ways. Duncan is a 25-minute drive away via the Cowichan Valley Highway/BC-18 E. The BC Transit Line 7 Bus runs between the communities several times a day, including on weekends, making it easy to do any shopping at the Village Green Mall or access other amenities available in this larger nearby community. 

The closest airport to Lake Cowichan is the Nanaimo Airport (YCD), a 40-minute (60 km) drive via the Cowichan Valley Highway/BC-18 E. There is also a public transit bus route, in which you can take the Line 7 BC Transit bus to Duncan, then route 70NCX to the city of Nanaimo. Victoria BC has the closest International airport (Victoria International Airport YYJ), just shy of a two drive via the Trans-Canada Highway/BC-1 S. 

Lake Cowichan Weather

Lake Cowichan’s weather is mild compared to the rest of the country, with wet and cloudy winters and comfortable dry summers. The warm season is between June and September, with an average high of 21 °C and a low of 12 °C. The cold season is from mid-November through early March, with an average low of 0 °C and high of 5 °C, with some snow accumulating during the coldest months.

Lake Cowichan is rich with indigenous culture and history, as the Ts’uubaa-asatx First Nation have lived on the shores of the lake for millennia. 

Lake Cowichan Health Care

Lake Cowichan has a community health unit (Lake Cowichan Health Unit), dental services, optometrists, pharmacies, alternative/holistic treatment centers, and more. For severe or chronic issues, Lake Cowichan is only a short drive away from Duncan, where the Cowichan District Hospital is located, offering services ranging from imaging to mental health care, acute care, emergency services, and heart health programs. 

Lake Cowichan Education

Lake Cowichan is part of the Cowichan Valley School District (BC SD79). There is Lake Cowichan Elementary School (grades 4-7) and Lake Cowichan Secondary School (grades 8-12). As this community is near several city centers, post-secondary options include the University of Victoria, Royal Roads, Camosun College in Victoria, and Vancouver Island University with North Cowichan and Nanaimo campuses. 

Things to Do in Lake Cowichan

Although it is a small community, there is plenty to do in Lake Cowichan. Outdoor adventures like biking, hiking, and spending time on the lake boating, waterskiing, fishing, and kayaking are all popular activities in the Lake Cowichan area year-round, but especially during the “tourist season” through the summer months. See fields of wildflowers in bloom in April, or treat yourself to a winery tour and tasting with one of the region’s many offerings. You can also visit the Cowichan River Provincial Park for white water kayaking and tubing or walk through a second-growth Douglas fir forest to a sandy beach at Gordon Bay Provincial Park
