About Cedar, Nanaimo, BC
South of the city of Nanaimo, along the banks of the Nanaimo River, you’ll find the small community of Cedar. Cedar was named after the Western Red Cedar trees that are abundant in the area, and it has a long history that stretches back to the late 19th century when a post office was first opened in the area. Long known as a rural, agricultural alternative to the more urban feel of Nanaimo, Cedar offers a range of interesting options to real estate investors.
The neighbourhood of Cedar can be found around 10 kilometers south of Nanaimo, and the drive along Cedar Road and the Trans Canada Highway to Downtown Nanaimo takes a bit over ten minutes, depending on traffic conditions. The drive to the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal—which offers frequent sailings to Vancouver—takes around twenty minutes, and driving to the Duke Point Ferry Terminal—which offers sailings to Tsawwassen—takes only eight minutes. Because of Cedar’s location south of Nanaimo and near the highway, it provides speedy access to Victoria: only an hour and a half by car to Vancouver Island’s other major population area.
When one thinks of Cedar, one word that comes to mind is “spacious.” The neighbourhood is nearly as big as the rest of the city combined. In Cedar, you’ll find excellent hiking trails, lakes and rivers, and some of the most secluded wilderness zones in the Nanaimo area. Much of the land is agricultural or undeveloped, but a few stores and a neighbourhood pub are found. For young families looking for lots of room to grow or real estate investors looking to acquire large properties at relatively low prices, Cedar is filled with exciting prospects.

Cedar residents are lucky to have one of the Nanaimo area’s top attractions right in their backyard. The Nanaimo River winds through Cedar and is equally synonymous with the city as the bathtub race or Nanaimo Bars. The Nanaimo River is deep and slow in many places, making it an ideal swimming river, with plenty of cliffs for the adventurous to jump off. Tubing down the river is another popular local activity, and even when it isn’t swimming weather, there are plenty of great hiking trails and bird-watching opportunities along the river.
