It provides access to the world-renowned Broken Group Islands and a chance for its community members to reconnect with the natural world. Wildlife sightings such as whales, bears, sea lions, seals, sea otters and eagles are a daily occurrence here. All the while there is access to certain comforts such as satellite internet, cell phone service and on-grid electricity service.

British Columbia is famous for its cool, wet climate, however, Salmon Beach is one of the more unique areas as the town is treated to beautiful ocean breezes and relatively warm, dry summers, perfect for relaxing on the beach enjoying the sunshine. The winters of Salmon Beach tend to be snowless, the region gets plenty of rain during the cooler months of the year, but the temperature rarely drops below freezing. 

Getting to Salmon Beach

Unless you are looking for Salmon Beach, you would probably never stumble upon it. To begin your journey to Salmon Beach you must begin by making your way to the West Coast of Vancouver Island to visit Tofino and Ucluelet. Along Highway 4 West just past Kennedy Hill is the Toquart Bay Forest Service Road. After turning left off the highway, you have eighteen kilometers of well-maintained gravel road before reaching Salmon Beach. Once off B.C. Ferries from Vancouver to Nanaimo, travel to Salmon Beach from Nanaimo is only 180 kilometers and about a three-hour drive. If you are coming from Victoria to Salmon Beach it is a 300 kilometer drive and about 4.5 hours. Salmon Beach is also accessible from Ucluelet via 21.6 kilometers of Forest Service road which takes about thirty-five minutes.

If you would prefer to skip the highway traffic, flights are available into Tofino Long Beach Airport. Pacific Coastal offers daily scheduled flights to Vancouver which then offers seamless connections to anywhere in the world. You may also book a private charter with Kenmore Air, Upper Valley Aviation and San Juan Airlines. Kenmore Air charters flights to anywhere in the Pacific United States, Upper Valley Aviation charters flights throughout Vancouver and San Jun Airlines offers direct service from the San Juan Islands, Anacortes, Bellingham and Seattle Areas. From the Tofino Long Beach Airport Salmon Beach is only a thirty-two kilometer drive and forty-five minute drive on a mix of highway and gravel roads.

Real Estate in Salmon Beach

Salmon Beach's real estate consists of small cabins, undeveloped lots and the whole area is zoned for seasonal recreational use. This is defined as “periodic non-permanent use for seasonal vacations and recreational purposes and not as the principal residence of the owners or occupiers of the lot”. Seasonal recreation use is limited to not more than 180 days in a calendar year whether the use is continuous or intermittent.

Education in Salmon Beach 

Salmon Beach is an incredible place to raise a family; the safe neighbourhoods are welcoming and friendly, the access to beaches and parks provide plenty of activity, and the school system is absolutely incredible. Salmon Beach residents fall under the jurisdiction of School District 70 Pacific Rim. This fantastic school board manages fifteen schools and houses approximately 4,590 elementary and secondary students. The closest schools to the Salmon Beach community are found in the neighbouring town of Ucluelet. Students travel between thirty to forty minutes to attend Ucluelet Elementary and Ucluelet Secondary Schools. Both of these schools have an exceptional reputation of high academic standards and fantastic athletic programs.

Things To Do in Salmon Beach

Many homes found within the borders of Salmon Beach include private boat ramps. Homeowners with a particular interest in water-vessels and water-based activities will delight in this fine feature. For those who enjoy the thrilling sport of fishing, the waters surrounding Salmon Beach are filled with a variety of species to be caught including salmon, halibut, and cod. There are plenty of little nooks along the Broken Island Group that are filled with these various fish species. The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is one of the most popular destinations on Vancouver Island. Here, visitors can view spectacular waterfalls, colorful rocks lining the rivers and beaches, and majestic, centuries-old trees. Filled with rainforests, beaches, and a rich history, Pacific Rim Park is perfect for overnight camping, day-trips soaking up sun and sand, or hiking through the winding trails stretching through the 123,000 acres of the park. 

One of the highlights of the Pacific Rim National Park is Long Beach, which is the most visited area of the park. With sixteen kilometers of sandy coastline, visitors to the beach have ample space to enjoy various beach activities including surfing. Long Beach is home to some of Canada’s best surfing opportunities. Long Beach is also one of the entry points to the famous West Coast Trail. Hiking this incredible and scenic route takes between five to seven days on the seventy-six-kilometer journey. The West Coast Trail passes through several designated lands of First Nations groups who have lived here for thousands of years. 

Another popular beach destination in the Salmon Beach area is the Ucluelet Big Beach. This beautiful beach park is surrounded by a large bay, towering cliffs, and rocky outcrops. Visitors can enjoy relaxing under the sun or hiking through the tranquil forests and across the cliffs. The beach is made up of a mix of pebbles and sand and is also sheltered by the winds by the surrounding cliffs, which allows for ultimate enjoyment while laying on the beach. Low tide rock pools are filled with shrimps, crabs, and anemones. Looking out at the Pacific Ocean provides the opportunity to spot dolphins and even humpback whales during the spring and summer migrations. 

Marine tours are available to those who wish to venture out onto the ocean with the safety of a guide. These are particularly great for more inexperienced hobbyists. These tours offer a selection of sea kayaking, canoeing, and whale watching endeavours. Along with the water-vessel activities, tours also include sport fishing opportunities and surfing lessons. Tourists and residents alike can enjoy these various water-based excursions. 

Though Salmon Beach itself doesn’t have a commercial outlet, the neighbouring Ucluelet has everything that locals could need or desire. Staple shopping is just a twenty-minute drive away, and more luxury items can be found just a little farther. Ucluelet is also home to a variety of entertainment opportunities and an exciting flurry of activity. 

Residents of Salmon Beach can enjoy a plethora of exceptional dining opportunities including eclectic coffee shops, trendy diners, and delicious fine dining options. There are plenty of modern and ethnic options in the nearby Tofino and Ucluelet neighbourhoods for locals to indulge in as well. 

Ucluelet is also home to the Ucluelet Inlet, which features the mouth of the Wild Pacific Trail. This scenic loop runs for approximately 8.8 kilometers and features spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The winding paths extend through mature forests and amble along beautiful beaches. The nature-infused sights inspire all those who take on the trail, which is suitable for all ages and skill levels and is also wheelchair accessible. No biking, horseback riding, or motorized vehicles of any kind are permitted along the beaches and trails, maintaining the natural beauty of the trail’s environment. 

Another incredible excursion for Salmon Beach locals is venturing over to the Ucluelet Aquarium to view the outstanding Giant Pacific octopus. This nonprofit organization began in the spring of 2004 as a mini aquarium along the Ucluelet waterfront. This pilot project was incredibly popular and successful and led to an expansion in the late 2000s. In 2012, the aquarium moved into the bigger building that is familiar to visitors today. 

The locals of Salmon Beach are treated to a number of incredible natural features and amazing amenities. The sweeping views out over the Pacific Ocean, the surrounding rainforests filled with flowing waterfalls and quiet rivers, the majestic mountains and sweeping cliffsides all offer a beautiful backdrop to one of the most scenic destinations in British Columbia.
