About Errington/Coombs/Hilliers, BC

It’s a quick drive from the nearby small city of Parksville-Qualicum. This close-knit community built Errington Hall in 1922 as a memorial to soldiers lost in World War I. It is operated by local volunteers and used for various purposes, from a performance series of roots, blues, and world music to workshops, dances, and community events.

Coombs has a unique history, as it was first established more than a hundred years ago by the Salvation Army as a new community for the residents of overpopulated cities in England to relocate to. The neighbourhood was named after Thomas Bales Coombs, who was the leader of the Salvation Army at the time that the community of Coombs was first formed. Early buildings in Coombs—including the old Ford Log House and the Coombs Community Commons (a school built over a century ago)—give the community its unique heritage charm.

Among residents of Vancouver Island, Coombs is perhaps best known as the location of the goats on the roof. A family of goats spends its days on the roof of the Old Country Market during warm months, which never fails to draw crowds of interested tourists. The Old Country Market is another attraction, home to plenty of local, artisanal products. Coombs is also home to a popular annual fall fair and a bluegrass music festival. Coombs is an exciting option for those looking to live in a small Vancouver Island neighborhood with its unique history and character.
