With plum tree lined streets and peekaboo views of the Alberni Valley Inlet from nearly every vantage point in this neighbourhood, there is a zen-like atmosphere around every corner.

Due to the layout of Cameron Heights, many homes benefit from mountain and water views. For this reason, several houses have been built as two-storey buildings with minimal landscaping. The elevation difference can also be felt just by crossing the street, making it, so homes are slightly staggered on the hillside. For those that are unable to glimpse the inlet, a myriad of beautiful, tall trees like Douglas Firs provide a lovely alternative.

This peaceful neighbourhood mainly contains single-family, detached homes. Many of these homes are split-level or two-storey builds, often with attached garages. Ranchers and duplexes are also found through Cameron Heights, but far less often.

Mid-century modern is the prominent architectural home style home buyers will encounter in Cameron Heights, as many homes were built around the same time. Craftsman is another less common style you may find. These houses typically have a simplistic front-of-house design, usually with minimal landscaping.

There are very few commercial real estate options within Cameron Heights. On Mallory Drive, a science observatory has an office, but that is about all you will find. About Cameron Heights

It is the ocean views that set Cameron Heights apart. Built on a hillside on the southernmost edge of Port Alberni, most homes in Cameron Heights enjoy inspirational views of the Alberni Inlet and the mountains of the valley. Those homes that do not have an ocean view still benefit from the serenity of this quiet residential neighbourhood, and the proximity to nature.

This Alberni Valley neighbourhood is not only highly sought after for its serenity, beauty and tranquility, but also for its accessibility to all of the amenities that Port Alberni has to offer. The neighbourhood feels tucked away while still being close to  town. At only a minute or two drive away, the commercial district of Uptown is an area with many shops, restaurants, and banks. Just down the hill from Uptown is the Harbour Quay, another wonderful waterfront area with shops, a restaurant, and a seaside playground. Not all neighbourhoods can provide a balance, but it is found within Cameron Heights.

Enveloped by the surrounding forest and footed by the deepest water port on Vancouver Island, this neighbourhood is the hidden gem of the Valley. Whether you are moving your small or extended family to Cameron Heights or you are planning on retiring in this unique little subdivision, there is a very good chance you will find your forever home nestled on this quaint little hilltop.

Traffic through this neighbourhood is quite minimal and usually reserved for residents, aside from the occasional school or city bus. The city bus also helps connect the region to the rest of the local transit system, with the Southside route cruising through about once an hour. Curved streets, a higher elevation, and a border of the thick forest also help muffle sounds from the city and logging trucks travelling up Ship Creek Road. This has created a residential neighbourhood with a slower pace of life, perfect for retirees and families.

This small subdivision is more like a micro community and no other time of year displays that more than Halloween! This neighbourhood comes to life each year with an orange glow and haunted howling echoing through the streets. The endless colours of autumn provide a picturesque scene that exudes peacefulness, even when the neighbourhood comes to life with trick or treaters!

Things To Do in Cameron Heights

Explore the Alberni Inlet Trail

Cameron Heights is located on the outer most edge of the City of Port Alberni. Just a short jaunt up the road is the Alberni Inlet Trail. Broken into several phases, the Alberni Inlet Trail is a moderately challenging hiking trail just moments away from Cameron Heights. Popular with dog walkers and hiking enthusiasts, this trail contains hills with a beautiful reward. The bulk of the trail is situated in a working forest and only 2km in there is a stunning lookout that provides spectacular panoramic views of the entire valley. From there, the trail expands for many more km, providing endless opportunities for exploration for hikers of every age and skill level.

Relax at Canal Waterfront Park

At the bottom of the hill, you will find the only cultured waterfront in the valley, Canal Beach. Formerly working land for an industrial saw mill, the City of Port Alberni and community partners have teamed up to create a beautiful multi use community park that hosts the annual Polar Bear swim and many other community events.

Kayakers launch from this location and can choose whether to head up the canal toward the West Coast, or paddle around the city’s waterfront. Either way, watch for sea lions, jellyfish, eagles and even an occasional pod of whales that frequently play along this stunning waterway, which happens to be the longest deep water port on Vancouver Island.

This park is usually less inhabited than others in town, giving it a reputation for being one of the more relaxing areas to visit. A communal fire pit, a covered gazebo area, portable washrooms, a volleyball net, and a large, grassy field for playing catch with your pup are some of the top features. Although there are several picnic tables and benches, visitors also enjoy bringing their folding chairs and setting up on the beach to watch the boats go by or the stunning views during sunset.

Hiking Trails

Nature trails are absolutely everywhere in this quiet Alberni Valley neighbourhood. You can choose to walk in the community forest that snakes along the side of Ship Creek Road or find one of the many entrances to the Valley’s most popular trail system, the Log Train Trail. The Fir Baby and Carriere to Ship Creek trails, being two of the most accessed, begin at the top of Cameron Heights. Be sure to bring your water bottle and wear comfortable and supportive shoes because once you start to explore, the hours slip away as you settle into the beautiful surroundings and spy the plentiful woodland critters that you are sure to encounter along the way.
