About Uplands, Oak Bay, BC

Colloquially known as "the Uplands" by locals, this community is 465 acres and was immaculately planned out by John Olmsted, a famous parks and neighbourhood designer of the 20th century who created inviting, comfortable landscapes and communities throughout North America with a focus on retaining the natural beauty of each area.

Uplands is rich in the history of British Columbia, with community staples like the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club in BC. Today, the Uplands community sticks to Olmsted's vision, keeping this mature landscape's winding streets and beautiful facade pristine.

As Uplands is located in the district of Oak Bay, it is a popular area for tourists to visit in the summer months. The neighbourhood features many luxurious amenities. Its proximity to downtown Victoria makes health care, schools, shopping centres, pubs, restaurants, and entertainment all within a short distance, but with enough separation to feel that you live outside the hustle and bustle of city living.

Things to Do in Uplands

Visit Uplands Park and Cattle Point

Uplands Park is a 75-acre wild woodland and beach park that features dramatic ocean visas with jagged rocky peaks and blown, stunted trees, a lovely stark contrast to the manicured lawns and flower beds of the residential parts of Oak Bay. It is a flat park accessible for everybody, with many easy crisscrossing gravel and dirt walking paths, boat ramps, picnic areas, a WWII memorial, and benches with scenic views. This park features many rare native herbs and plants, including Douglas Fir, Garry Oak, Chinese Yew, Weeping Birch, and Black Cottonwood trees.

Cattle Point is connected to Uplands Park and is the best place in Victoria to view the night sky without light pollution. It is a natural oasis of tranquility off Beach Drive, and plenty of parking is available. There are boat ramps and sightseeing benches, and this is a popular place for locals to spend time beachcombing, sightseeing, and hiking. Birding is also a popular activity, and Rufous Hummingbirds, Turkey Vultures, Great Blue Herons, Downy Woodpeckers, and Violet-green Swallows are familiar sights.

From Cattle Point, you can take a path to a steep set of stairs that lead down to Willows Beach, a popular area for families, swimmers, and sunbathers, with a playground and public washrooms. The Willows Beach Tea Room is a concession stand that sells fries, hot dogs, sandwiches, beverages, ice cream, and poutine.
