Real Estate in Uplands

Nanaimo’s Uplands neighbourhood was first developed in the 1970s and features charming 50-plus-year-old houses, often on quiet, mature, tree-lined streets. In Uplands, you’ll also find character homes—some built near the beginning of the 20th century—that offer rustic charm, whether for young professionals, those looking to downsize, or as renovation projects.

On the other end of the spectrum, the brand new Linley Point development offers just-built homes located right amidst the beautiful Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park. This planned community has stylishly-built family homes that feature high-end appliances and airy open-concept living spaces. These homes are located on quiet, safe roads and are next to wildlife-filled wetlands, offering a unique experience to live amidst nature while still maintaining the convenience of urban life.

A second wave of development took place in Uplands in the 1990s, mainly in affordable condo buildings around Long Lake. Today, these condo units are an excellent option for young professionals, retirees, and those looking to invest in income-producing rental suites. Offering great walkability to Country Club Centre, schools, public transit, and Long Lake itself, real estate options in this part of Uplands are budget-friendly and provide a high standard of living.

In the more northern part of Uplands, around Rock City Road, near the edge of Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park, are some beautiful mid-century modern homes on large lots that can stretch up to an acre in size and above. These homes often offer a blend of stylish features that date back to the ’50s and ’60s, with modern updates sprinkled in. Because of the large sizes of the older homes in this area, there’s potential for rental suites in the finished basements or guest houses these properties often possess.

Long Lake Heights is along the northern part of Long Lake, which offers beautiful hilltop homes with excellent views of the lake below and nearby mountain ranges. Loft homes in Long Lake Heights often feature large deck areas perfect for entertaining guests on summer nights. The desirable views make it a solid option for real estate investors looking for properties to use as vacation rentals or BnBs.

Things to Do in Uplands

One of Nanaimo’s characteristic outdoor destinations is Piper’s Lagoon—a large, eight-hectare park slightly to the east of Uplands with an extensive trail system offering several paths to beautiful views of the Strait of Georgia. The water is cold, though some brave souls can be seen swimming in warmer months. Wildlife can be observed at Piper’s Lagoon, including herons, kingfishers, loons, and more. Particularly during sunrise and sunset, Piper’s is one of Nanaimo’s most beautiful spots.

Speaking of beautiful natural attractions in Nanaimo, another popular destination near Uplands is Rutherford Ridge—an excellent vantage point from which to observe Mount Benson, Duke Point, and even Nanoose Bay on clear days. Rutherford Ridge has a moderately-difficult 3.5 km loop trail that leads to its scenic viewpoint.

Looking at a map of Uplands, you’ll see a large portion of green space in the middle of the neighbourhood. That’s Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park, an extensive protected wilderness space that contributes to much of Uplands’ serene, laid-back atmosphere. In Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park, plenty of loop trails vary in length and difficulty, and the most popular is the 5 km Burma Trail Loop. The trails in this park are well-maintained and accessible to walkers, hikers, and runners of all ages and skill levels.
