Piper’s Lagoon is home to a thriving wildlife population, including a bird population that includes blue herons, loons, kingfishers, and plenty of other marine birds. Piper’s Lagoon is a popular spot for beachcombing, storm watching, and relaxing walks, even in the colder months. 

Neck Point Park

Not far from Piper’s Lagoon, slightly to the north, is another popular park for enjoying the ocean scenery—Neck Point Park. Neck Point offers impressive opportunities to spot oceanic wildlife, including otters, sea lions, and whales. At Neck Point, there are numerous beautiful rocky beaches to choose from, and well-maintained walking paths wind through the park. The Neck Point Loop hiking trail is around 2 km long, takes around an hour, and is accessible to walkers and hikers of all skill levels. Beyond the main loop trail, several other paths lead to Finn Beach, Indian Beach, and other destinations. 

Lantzville Lookout Loop

There are several natural attractions in North Nanaimo that don’t involve the ocean! Slightly north, in Lantzville, you’ll find the Lantzville Lookout Loop, a 6 km hiking trail with excellent views of Mount Arrowsmith. The Lantzville Lookout Loop is a great hike in the summer and winter months, but if conditions are muddy or snowy, you’ll want to bring shoes with good traction—and maybe even hiking poles—as the terrain can be tricky in certain parts.
