About Gorge Vale, Esqimalt, BC
Gorge Vale is a neighbourhood in the municipality of Esquimalt, originally named “the place of shoaling waters” (Es-whoy-malth) by the indigenous peoples of the area. Esquimalt, BC, became an incorporated municipality of Victoria in 1912. Located west of downtown Victoria, this community has multiple beaches and heritage buildings dating back to the early 1900s.
Today, it is conveniently located within Greater Victoria. Major roads and bus routes run through the area for quick access to the downtown core, the University of Victoria, Royal Roads University, Camosun College, major shopping centres, and the Westshore Communities. You are only minutes away from various beaches and parks, and you can drive to the beautiful Goldstream Provincial Park to spend time in the West Coast rainforest in under 20 minutes.
There are many green spaces in the Gorge Vale neighbourhood, with recreation activities available like hiking, cycling, and playgrounds for the kids to enjoy. The Naden Athletic Centre and other Canadian Pacific Naval forces facilities are in this community. Gorge Vale Golf Club
Established in 1927, the 142-acre Gorge Vale Golf Club is a well-maintained course for all skill levels, with an 18-hole round. It has a mature landscape in a park-like setting. Although this course is located in the middle of the city, the beauty of the grounds will make you feel like you are on a nature reserve.
Whether you are a seasoned pro or are ready for your first golf lesson, this is a place everybody is welcome to come and play a round. There are fully-grown Garry Oak trees, water hazards, and five tee locations to choose from on the course. It also has a 300-yard grass tee-driving range and a chipping green, allowing players to remain active and practice their game year-round, weather permitting.
Visit Esquimalt Gorge Park and the Gorge Waterway Nature House
The Esquimalt Gorge Park is located on Tillicum Road, south of the Gorge Waterway, and has playground equipment, public benches, tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, and a children’s beach area. Covered in mature trees, including hundred-year-old umbrella pines, this park is a lovely place to spend time outdoors with family and friends.
The Gorge Waterway Nature House is an educational facility in the park where the community can gather and learn about environmental research and actions. This nature house has interactive displays, a watershed model of the Gorge Waterway, and a “touch tank” full of local marine species for educational purposes and public outreach.
Tour CFB Esquimalt Naval and Military Museum
Take a guided tour or walk yourself through the many permanent and temporary exhibits featured in this informative museum to increase your understanding of the contributions made by the West Coast Canadian Navy and Army. The focus is on the Battle of the Atlantic, with displays about the 100-year history of Canadian submarines. Offering archival services and a database of thousands of photos that can be used in research, this is a small museum run mainly by volunteers who are passionate about history.
