Things to Do in North Campbell River

Check out the Local Totem Poles

Discovery Harbour Centre is a shopping centre in downtown Campbell River developed and managed by the Wei Wai Kum First Nation. It features artwork that depicts the history of this nation of peoples, including numerous totem poles.

Two additional totem poles were placed at the John Hart Lookout along the Canyon View Trail that overlooks the Campbell River in 2020. The We Wai Kai Nation pole was carved by local artists and represents animals such as bears, salmon, sea serpents, and eagles. The Wei Wai Kum Nation Pole has a human bubble man, bear, salmon, and thunderbird. Three welcome totem poles were also unveiled at Quathiaski Cove on Quadra Island in 2019 and are just a short ferry ride away.

Visit the Famous Painter's Lodge

Built by E.P. Painter in the 1940s, Painter's Lodge was created to host sports fishermen in Campbell River. Although the original lodge burned down and was rebuilt in the 1980s, it has since become a staple in the fishing tourism industry. The lodge is located close to Frenchman's Pool and Tyee Pool and is an excellent home base for those trying to catch giant Pacific salmon. Some famous people who have stayed at the lodge include Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and John Wayne.
