About Okanagan Landing, Vernon

A beautiful and scenic neighbourhood on the banks of the Okanagan Lake, you might hear locals of Vernon, BC refer to Okanagan Landing simply as ‘The Landing.’ Located south of Vernon, Okanagan Landing was a major hub for railways and steamboats in the 1800s, serving as a bridge between the Canadian Pacific Railway boat and train service. Okanagan Landing was developed in 1892 and officially became part of Vernon in 1993.

There are several honourable schools in Okanagan Landing, including École Beairsto Elementary, Okanagan Landing Elementary School, Ellison Elementary School, and Clarence Fulton Secondary School. 

Things To Do in Okanagan Landing

Living in Okanagan Landing has its perks, one of the best being spent in the summer months at any of the three beaches located in the neighbourhood. There are many lakeshore parks to take advantage of and the only neighbourhood in Vernon with a waterfront pub and marina. Outboard Pub offers delicious food and good times. 

Kin Beach Provincial Park

Kin Beach is located in central Vancouver Island and has enough outdoor activities to keep you occupied for the day. The park offers swimming, playgrounds, fishing, cycling, canoeing, and a picnic area. There are also campgrounds on-site if you plan on extending your stay to a few days or a weekend. There is a small shop for any last-minute items you may have forgotten to bring. 

Paddlewheel Park and Community Center 

Paddlewheel Park is a lovely area to take the family, and it has an abundance of tall trees to offer some shade on a scorching Okanagan day. There are many outdoor activities to enjoy, such as basketball, beach volleyball, swimming, and lying on the beach. There are tennis courts, a playground, boat launches, and picnic areas.  

Ellison Provincial Park 

Located on the northeastern shore of Okanagan Lake, Ellison Park offers hiking for the advanced, with steep trails. There are many other outdoor activities to enjoy with over 220 hectares of forest and land. Rich in nature and culture, evident by the signs of First Nations habitation in the archeological sites. Grassy, open areas surrounded by Douglas Fir and Pine are home to many creatures to spot. 

Vernon Yacht Club 

Back in 1951, the idea of a Yacht club was brought up and to bring in some interested members to join, a race was set up to watch the yachts sail, but the weather didn’t permit. That didn’t stop the residents from making it a regular occurrence, and the Yacht club was formed. Located northeast of the Okanagan Lake, The Vernon Yacht Club offers facilities for powerboats and sailboats. They are known for Women’s Regatta, Sailboat Races, and their famous pig roast. 

Vernon Flying Club 

Established in 1946, Vernon Flying Club is for the aviation lover in you. A memorable historical site to witness that is now honoured to host fly-in breakfasts, BBQs, other social events, and the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association for Kids, held every summer.
