Dufferin is located north of the Trans Canada Highway and southwest of Kamloops. The city of Dufferin was incorporated back in 1893. Initially a district created in 1971, Dufferin officially became a city in Kamloops shortly after, in 1973. There is some fascinating history when it comes to Dufferin. It was initially named Cumcloups by Alexander Ross of the Astoria Fur Company. Dufferin was a booming hub for these popular industries during the fur trade and gold rush era. Lumbering and cattle-ranching have been the most significant industries in the area today.
Vancouver is approximately four hours away by car, and Dufferin is on the way through the TransCanada Highway, so many travellers are stopping in the community. Some amenities close by include a gas station, restaurant, and shopping. Dufferin Park is a popular spot to find lots of family fun and outdoor recreation. It borders Kenna Cartwright Nature Park, and the park is dog friendly as long as your pet is on a leash. The park also has other activities such as tennis courts, picnic tables, and dog-friendly paths for a leisurely walk.
The most convenient and useful amenities and businesses are located in nearby Aberdeen Mall. There is a strip mall and big-box retailers. The Cascades Casino is less than five minutes away and hosts three different dining opportunities. Getting around Dufferin is convenient, with regular bus routes that stop right at the Aberdeen Mall and the Thompsons River University. Residents are pleased to have easy access to working out of the city centre only seconds to the highway.
Dufferin students have a few schools to attend, including Dufferin Elementary School, Aberdeen Elementary School, Sa-Hali Secondary School, and South Kamloops Secondary. The Kamloops Airport is only a twenty-minute drive.
Things To Do in Dufferin
Kenna Cartwright is one of the most popular green spaces in Dufferin. Established in 1996, the park has over 800 hectares of recreational space, marking it the largest municipal park in the province. There is a picnic area and an off-leash dog park to enjoy. The range of difficulties is perfect for new or expert hikers with four different trailheads.
The University also holds Tournament Capital Centre, a place to enjoy activities like Gymnastics, swimming, indoor track, fitness facility, courts and sports field.
Kamloops Art Gallery
Kamloops Art Gallery was incorporated in 1978 and is the most extensive art gallery in the interior of British Columbia. It is home to over 3,000 works of art. The gallery also hosts over twelve exhibitions annually, offering many other exciting opportunities, including tours, presentations and studio-based programming for all ages.
Kamloops Longboard Park
Kamloops Longboard Park is great for those wanting to pick up a new hobby. It will keep your kids busy for hours with beginner and intermediate runs. Featured in BC Magazine in 2020, this park is loved by all locals and those who aren’t close by don’t mind making the trip to test the two runs, either the Blue Run or the Black Runmetre track. The park is 355 metres long and the only of its kind; the only park entirely dedicated to longboarding in the world.
Cliffs Climbing Gym
Cliffs Climbing Gym is home to Kamloops' best indoor climbing facility and is only five minutes away. This is a great activity to stay fit and have fun at any skill level. They have over 60 routes and 100 boulder problems to keep you challenged. Bring the whole family or a large group of friends. They also host birthday parties and offer introductory lessons.
