About Sparwood, BC
Sparwood is the second-largest community along the Elk River in the southeast Kootenay region of British Columbia, and it is a district municipality with approximately 4,200 residents. The area is named after the former railroad stop, Sparwood, because the trees from the area were used to manufacture “spars” (masts or yards) for ships.
The economy of Sparwood is based mainly on logging and coal mining, with many residents working as labourers in the mines and adjacent industries like trucking or mechanics. The town has local radio stations, cable TV channels, newspapers, grocery stores, gas stations, post offices, police stations, fire stations, emergency and search and rescue services.
Getting to Sparwood
Sparwood is a 30.4 km, 21-minute drive east from Fernie, BC, on the Crowsnest Highway, BC-3 E. It is a 2-hour and 42-minute drive southwest of Calgary, AB, the nearest metropolitan centre. Vancouver is approximately an 11-hour drive, at 968 km away, and the closest airport is the Canadian Rockies International Airport in Cranbrook, BC, a 1.5-hour drive on Highway 3.
In Sparwood, BC, the warm season lasts from mid-June to mid-September, with an average high in July of 22°C and a low of 8°C. The coldest month is December, with an average low of -12°C and a high of -2°C.
The wettest part of the year in Sparwood falls between May and July, and the snowy season lasts from early October to late May of each year, so there is plenty of time for all your outdoor activities.
