About New Denver, BC
The Slocan Valley was an ore mining area in the 19th century, ending around the 1930s depression era. The village of New Denver was incorporated in 1929 and was named after Denver, Colorado, a community that shares the history of being a mining community.
The village of New Denver has all the small-town amenities you and your family need, including a post office, convenience store, community halls, a liquor store, a hardware store, gas stations, a health food store, a credit union, and several places to eat.
Getting to New Denver
The well-known tourist town of Silverton is a short 5-minute drive from New Denver along highway BC-6, or drive north on the same highway for 30 minutes, and you'll reach the nearby community of Slocan.
The nearest airport is the West Kootenay Regional Airport(WKR) in Castlegar, served by Air Canada Jazz with flights to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) for international trips. Private aircraft, medevac, the Southeast Fire Centre, and Dam Helicopters also use this airport. Castlegar is 99.8 km away from New Denver, or a 1-hour 16-minute drive, via BC-6 north.
BC Transit Route 74 passes through New Denver on its Nakusp to Nelson route once a day, and Route 52 from Nakusp to Playmor (via Silverton) runs twice every weekday.
New Denver Weather
The Slocan Valley has four distinct seasons, with hot, dry summers, wet spring and autumnal climates, and plenty of snow in the winter. Because of its proximity to Slocan Lake, New Denver experiences milder temperatures than most of the Slocan Valley.
Winter snow is expected from December through March every year, with average temperatures having a high of -3°C and a low of -13°C. In the warmest summer months, the average is a high of 23°C to a low of 6°C.
New Denver Culture
The Silvery Slocan Museum is a museum over 100 years old featuring displays about the area's heritage, with exhibits on mining, logging, and agricultural history. This building is also the location of the local Chamber of Commerce.
See the Nikkei Internment Memorial Center, an organization dedicated to preserving the history of the internment of 22,000 Japanese Canadians during the second world war. See artifacts, interpreted displays, and the Heiwa Teien garden on a former internment campsite called “The Orchard.”
Bosun Hall is a gathering place in the community and has been for over a century. The operation and upkeep of this historic building are supported by the proceeds from the Donation Store on Main Street.

The community of New Denver has a small K-12 school, the Lucerne Elementary/Secondary school, with approximately 100 students. The Slocan Valley is in School District 10, in which there is also a grade 10-12 blended/distributed learning program available that runs out of New Denver or Nakusp, with online components for independent study programs.
New Denver Health Care
New Denver is part of the Interior Health Authority. Health care like family doctor visits is provided at the Slocan Community Health Centre, with various essential services, including 24-hour emergency services, an ambulance, hospice care, physiotherapy, pharmacy services, X-ray, and residential care services. New Denver has a dentist and many alternative health practitioners throughout the Slocan Valley.
The nearest hospital is Arrow Lakes Hospital in Nakusp, and then the Castlegar & District Hospital, so some medical appointments require traveling. Telehealth services for people who do not require in-person visit is another option for residents.
Things to Do in New Denver
Outdoorsy people will enjoy hiking or biking the Galena Trail or Mori Trail, checking out the nearby Wilson Creek Falls in the summer, and going cat skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking in the winter Selkirk Mountains. For a peaceful moment, take time to relax and reflect at the Kohan Reflection Garden.
Centennial Campground and park, on the shore of Slocan Lake, is excellent for families, featuring a playground, beach volleyball court, a playing field, gazebo, covered BBQ area, and a cordoned-off beach for swimming. Slocan Lake is a prime location for canoeing, kayaking, sailing. You can fish for rainbow and bull trout, kokanee salmon, and lingcod. Scuba divers enjoy finding old mining relics and historic ship and train wrecks below the surface.
